The Atlantic: "Five Reasons the House GOP Is to Blame"
.....Great chart at end of showing impact of Bush Wars and Tax Cuts
Still: When we look back on the destructive folly of this summer, none of us will be seen at our best. But the people threatening to bring out the worst are mostly in the House GOP. As David Brooks put it in his column three weeks ago:
>> If the debt ceiling talks fail, independent voters will see that Democrats were willing to compromise but Republicans were not. If responsible Republicans don't take control, independents will conclude that Republican fanaticism caused this default. They will conclude that Republicans are not fit to govern.
And they will be right.<<
One of the deficit charts, via the New York Times. For more on its background, see this earlier post.

Reflector.com - Editorial: "Jobless ignored in Raleigh"
....Thank you so much for writing this editorial! I'm from Ayden and now live in Augusta, GA. In GA, NC and across this country, the jobless have been sent to the back of the "political bus". The 2010 Elections were all about jobs until the Republicans won. Now, they only talk about debt, taxes and repealing progressive legislation. It is time for all of us to seek the middle ground.....reducing waste and unnecessary government expenditures while taxing the wealthy and major corporations to help maintain necessary government services, fix our crumbling infrastructure and educate our children. Read the Editorial and give them so feedback..
....The GOP-led Assembly aptly demonstrated its view of the unemployed by blocking an extension of their federal benefits for six weeks. Republican leaders attempted to cast blame on Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue for the delay, but it was Perdue who ultimately bypassed lawmakers to restore the payments after an unnecessary tug-of-war......

CredoAction: "Tell President Obama: Use your 14th Amendment powers and end the crisis"
SIGN THE PETITION NOW -----
The petition reads:"President Obama, I urge you to invoke your 14th Amendment powers and end this crisis. The 14th Amendment clearly states that the US government's debt 'shall not be questioned.' Extremist Republicans in the House have held America hostage for too long. It is time to act without them. It is time to use your 14th Amendment powers."

AllThingsD.com - "Obama: I Want YOU to Crash John Boehner’s Web Server"
Among the sites that went down: That of Speaker of the House John Boehner, the Ohio Republican who addressed the nation after the president. Others down as of 8:30 am Pacific time were those of Elliot Engel, Democratic representative from New York; Sen. Jim DeMint, a Republican senator from South Carolina; and Rep. Michelle Bachmann, the Republican from Minnesota now running for president. (Bachmann’s appears to be variously up and down, but slow to respond.) The Wall Street Journal has more.
Meanwhile, the president’s Web site is operating normally... More Here --- http://ping.fm/EKxWU

Washington Post / Bloomberg Business: " How default would harm homeowners, cities, businesses and everyone else"
...Listen Up you "Tea Party" Republicans. You are about to crash the economy into a wall again!!
If America’s credit rating falls, it’s taking a lot more than just Treasury securities with it. It’s going to take the whole credit market with it. Which is exactly how the subprime housing sector took the economy down in 2008. It would be like 2008, but worse. .....More Here---- http://ping.fm/B31rd

Scary New GOP Poll - The Daily Beast

Nicholas Kamm, AFP / Getty Images
On the heels of health care, a new Harris poll reveals Republican attitudes about Obama: Two-thirds think he's a socialist, 57 percent a Muslim—and 24 percent say "he may be the Antichrist."
To anyone who thinks the end of the health-care vote means a return to civility, wake up.
Obama Derangement Syndrome—pathological hatred of the president posing as patriotism—has infected the Republican Party. Here's new data to prove it:
- 67 percent of Republicans (and 40 percent of Americans overall) believe that Obama is a socialist.
The belief that Obama is a “domestic enemy” is widely held—a sign of trouble yet to come.
- 57 percent of Republicans (32 percent overall) believe that Obama is a Muslim
- 45 percent of Republicans (25 percent overall) agree with the Birthers in their belief that Obama was "not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president"
- 38 percent of Republicans (20 percent overall) say that Obama is "doing many of the things that Hitler did"
- Scariest of all, 24 percent of Republicans (14 percent overall) say that Obama "may be the Antichrist."
